Selected Commercial Work

The New York Times

I designed and folded a series of digital devices, including a walkman, headphones, and cassette tape, to be used as the cover art for an article about the importance of paper to Japanese culture in the December, 2018 edition of The New York Times Style Magazine.

Paper Tigers on Facebook Watch | Kin Community

I was commissioned by Kin Community to be featured in a series on paper artists called Paper Tigers, developed for Facebook Watch. It is a beautiful short film featuring my art and process. The original video can be found on the Paper Tigers FB page, along with additional videos in the paper artist series.

Tiffany & Co.

I folded some cardinals for Tiffany & Co. to be photographed with some of their leather goods for their website. This was the easiest type of commission - they just asked for an existing design - the cardinal shown here.

Century 21

I designed and folded a salmon for Century 21’s “Relentless Agent Award” which was then recreated out of a metal real estate sign. This was a super fun project. They also created a short film to showcase the process of me designing and folding the salmon, which we filmed in Detroit. The film was shown to their agents during the awards ceremony, and they also shared an interview with me about my work.

Shortlist Magazine

I designed and folded a body builder to be used as the cover art for ShortList magazine. The model uses two sheets of paper - one for the body, and one for the head.

Ulle Johnson

Ulle Johnson asked me to design a flower that could be folded using one of the patterns being used in their fall fashion lineup. The flower was being used as a gift in a mailed invitation for an event they were hosting. I also created a diagram for the flower to be included in the mailing.

Dove

Dove reached out to me about doing a web commercial using Dove lotion to wet fold paper. I designed a rose for the commercial, which we filmed in my studio.

Ohio National

I have designed and folded a series of origami models for Ohio National, to be used in their print and online advertising. Shown here is an armadillo, and I’ve also folded a unicorn and a peacock.

Amtrak

Amtrak has an onboard magazine called The National. In each issue of The National, Amtrak features an artist’s interpretation of its national route system. Exploring how to interpret the rail system in paper was a fun and interesting challenge. In the end, I settled on an irregular tessellation pattern as it stayed true to the spirit of origami’s unspoken rule of “one sheet, no cuts and no glue.”

MedPace

MedPace reached out to be about creating an origami DNA model for an advertisement campaign. There is already a very well-known DNA origami model, with instructions easily found on the internet. My challenge here was to create something distinct from this while still resembling DNA, and shown here is my result.

An important aspect of commission work is ensuring that your design does not violate any copyright issues. It must be original and not resemble other designs that could open up copyright infringement issues for you and the company you’re working for. As an experienced designer, this is typically not an issue for me. But occasionally a subject can be challenging in this regard, due to the fact there are not too many unique ways to represent it, as was the case with this DNA model. I was very pleased with the result, which I feel actually makes the “ladder” of the DNA stand out more.
