Amtrak’s “The National” Magazine

Commission to Design an Interpretation of Amtrak’s National Route System, Photographs and Video by Lyndon French

This was a combination of a design commission as well as an opportunity to be a featured artist in Amtrak’s The National magazine. It was a fun challenge to find a way, through origami, to depict the route system. I did a great deal of research and explored a number of different ideas that showcases the diverse natural world across the country. But in the end, I went with a more minimalist approach as I wanted to stay true to the spirit of folding a model from a single sheet of paper. This worked well, as Amtrak decided to record me folding the model and created a short video of the process (shared below). Along with my design, the magazine included a nice feature about me and my art along with a short interview and some beautiful photographs by the very talented Lyndon French.
